Bay of Islands, is the place of the first Church in New Zealand & the first capital (which has since been moved to Wellington). Most importantly, it is where Captain Cook, the first English navigator landed & discovered New Zealand in 1769. It is also known for the controversial signing of the treaty of Waitangi which gave legal privilege & additional rights to the Maori people.
